Current Projects

Conduct field analysis for GOLDROP and promote mercury-free mining.

Duration of the project:

March 2024 – September 2024

Country:

Colombia (Riosucio, Caldas; Unión Panamericana, Chocó; y Buenos Aires, Cauca)

Donor:

Gemological Institute of America (GIA). Implemented by Mercury Free Mining (MFM) and the Alliance for Responsible Mining (ARM)

Project Summary:

The Alliance for Responsible Mining (ARM) and Mercury Free Mining (MFM) propose a 3-phase program to deploy GOLDROP, an emerging technology identified through GIA funding as a potential game-changing innovation in Artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM). The project aims to improve the well-being of ASM communities by introducing them to safer and more efficient technology for gold recovery.

Objective:

Present ASM communities with an alternative to traditional mercury mining by introducing a technology (GOLDROP) that reduces their exposure to toxic hazards (mercury, lead, cyanide and arsenic), decreases the amount of time and arduous physical work required and offers a better gold recovery.

    • Objective 1. Implementation of technology (GOLDROP) and exchange of knowledge with three (3) Colombian ASM communities.
    • Objective 2. If proven successful, a model/procedure to scale technology deployment methods for further expansion in South America, Africa and beyond.
    • Objective 3. Through documentation and dissemination, increase awareness of ASM through social media, conventional media and ARM/MFM connections. Including at least one (1) academic article, two (2) popular articles and a video.

Beneficiaries:

Artisanal and small-scale mining communities of the Cañamomo and Lomaprieta Indigenous Reservation, in Riosucio, Caldas; the Cerro Teta Community Council, in Buenos Aires, Cauca; and the Greater Community Council of the Pan American Union, in Chocó.

Expected Results:

The project is expected to significantly improve the working conditions of ASM miners and increase the income of mining communities. It will also contribute to developing a more sustainable gold mining industry by addressing the following critical ASM issues.
