Bogotá, November 17, 2024 – The Alliance for Responsible Mining (ARM) is proud to announce its selection as one of the beneficiaries of Scotiabank’s 2024 Net-Zero Research Fund. This prestigious fund, which supports innovative research and initiatives related to decarbonization and the transition to a net-zero economy, awarded a total of $1 million in grants to organizations in Canada, Colombia, Mexico, and Peru.

The project led by the Alliance for Responsible Mining (ARM) will focus on reducing the carbon footprint of artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) in South America by implementing responsible practices and fostering environmental restoration at gold mining sites in Colombia and Peru. This effort aims to create a positive impact on mining communities, contributing to sustainability and resilience in the face of climate change.

Johnatan Ramírez, ARM’s Monitoring, Evaluation, and Learning (MEL) leader, emphasized the significance of this project:

"This recognition reinforces our commitment to sustainability in the artisanal and small-scale mining sector. Our initiative aims not only to reduce carbon emissions but also to empower mining communities by promoting a development model that respects the environment and improves the livelihoods of those who depend on this activity."

Since 2021, Scotiabank’s Net-Zero Research Fund has supported over 40 projects focused on climate research and solutions. This year’s awarded projects address topics ranging from emission measurement and reduction to the development of alternative biofertilizers and low-impact energy systems.

With this new collaboration, ARM reaffirms its leadership in developing sustainable mining models, demonstrating that the transition to a low-carbon future is achievable through strategic partnerships and concrete actions on the ground.
