After one year of Fairmined Certification the Mongolian NGO XAMODX successfully passes its recertification audit.
Reaching Fairmined Certification is a challenge for artisanal and small-scale mining organizations, but maintaining it also requires continued efforts and improvements. That’s why the Alliance for Responsible Mining is happy to announce that XAMODX renewed its certification and continues to draw benefits from participating in the Fairmined initiative.
XAMODX recently passed the independent audit by the certification entity IMO Swiss AG (IMO), meeting the progressive requirements of the Fairmined Standard. To renew the certification for the first time, the Standard mainly calls for continued compliance with entry requirements and advanced requirements in terms of working conditions, environmental management and management of the Fairmined Premium that is received from Fairmined Gold sales.
Mr. Otgonbaatar Chamin, Executive Director at XAMODX NGO said “The recertification of the XAMODX NGO proves that members of the NGO now have positive habits in complying with the Fairmined Standard requirements and are moving towards the creation of a responsible artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) in Mongolia. It is a result of one year of hard work for all the Fairmined members of the NGO. Fairmined means we have more responsibilities in strengthening the achievements we made so far in developing a responsible ASM. We will be happy to share our experiences with other ASM organizations in the country and abroad”.
A special note on XAMODX is that they produce Fairmined Ecological Gold, meaning that they don’t use any toxic chemicals at all in the gold processing. For their Fairmined Ecological Gold XAMODX receives an additional Ecological Premium ($2000 USD/kg), on top of the Fairmined Premium ($4000 USD/kg) due to the exceptional character of Ecological Gold and the additional requirements these miners meet. The Fairmined Premium intends to be invested in better mining practices and projects to improve the quality of life for miners, their families and the communities they live in.
XAMODX was the first Asian mining organization to ever obtain Fairmined Certification, thanks to the support of ARM’s ally the Sustainable Artisanal Mining (SAM) Project, who has also been a key partner in establishing supply chains from Mongolia. Fairmined Certification opened a new door for XAMODX NGO to export its gold to ethical world gold markets. XAMODX can now benefit from an international price for their gold as well as an additional Premium to invest in improving their mining operations and the quality of life of the local community.
