ARM announces a joint declaration with UNIDO to collaborate on Artisanal and Small-scale Gold Mining (ASGM) assistance.
The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and Alliance for Responsible Mining (ARM) have agreed to collaborate in the transformation of ASGM.  The joint declaration signed by the two organizations recognizes the potential of Fairtrade and Fairmined certification to drive responsible and equitable development of ASGM communities and to promote the reduction of the use of mercury and improve environmental management in ASGM operations.
UNIDO and ARM shall work in close partnership to support mining operations in their process of complying with Fairtrade and Fairmined gold certification requirements, focusing their efforts on following areas:
Capacity-building of the mining operations in order to reach certification,
Capacity-building for the development of small and medium-sized enterprises and the promotion of entrepreneurship,
Development and adoption of more efficient and environmental friendly technologies and processes,
Capacity building of ASGM organizations in Gold trade and supply chain knowledge,
Public policy advocacy
Fairtrade and Fairmined gold certification is a result of the partnership between Fairtrade International (FLO) and the Alliance for Responsible Mining (ARM). The two organizations combined their expertise to create his groundbreaking initiative which enables ASM miners to improve their livelihoods and assures concerned consumers that gold jewelry they buy is responsibly sourced.
ARM welcomes this opportunity of working with UNIDO to extend the benefits of Fairtrade and Fairmined programme to more ASGM miners and their communities in Africa and Latin America.
