The work of the Green-Gold (Oro Verde) Foundation has enabled the association of families, numbering 700 miners, to become a decent way of life. They have achieved an autonomy that allows them to keep their roots, while their work is beneficial to the environment.
Each miner collects gold or platinum and brings his production to Green-Gold where the metal is bought from them to be sold incountries like the United States, Canada, Germany, Australia, Denmark, France, Netherlands and United Kingdom. As an added value, each miner is given a 15% premium by extracting the metal with ecological respect.
Chocó Green Gold Artisans were awarded this year’s International Award for Best SEED sustainable development initiative, the first time the distinction went to a mining project. The SEED (Supporting Entrepreneurs for Sustainable Development) is an initiative formed by international agencies including UNDP United Nations, multinational organizations, civil society and governments in eight countries.
