Peru’s ASCM Transformation: Towards Responsible Copper Supply Chains
Project duration:
1 May 2024 to 30 September 2026
Country:
Peru
Donor:
European Partnership for Responsible Minerals (EPRM)

Summary:
The integration of artisanal and small-scale copper mining (ASCM) into responsible supply chains in Peru faces a range of challenges, including limited official information, concession conflicts, anti-competitive practices, environmental impacts, occupational health and safety hazards, and human rights violations. The growing small-scale/informal sector and the potential for conflicts hinder the formalisation and responsible operation of ASCM, perpetuating a cycle of poverty, environmental degradation, and social injustice.
In this contexts, the project aims to integrate artisanal and small-scale copper miners (ASCM) production into global responsible formal supply chains. Outcomes will focus in fostering positive interactions within the ASCM sector, promoteing respect for human rights, encouraging the adoption of better mining practices for ASCM, and supporting the integration of ASCM production into responsible supply chains. This will help to improve the standard of living for ASCM miners and their communities in Peru.
Objective:
A thriving and sustainable ASCM sector in Peru that contributes to the economic and social development of the country while upholding human rights and protecting the environment, thereby helping to create a more sustainable and equitable copper supply chain.
Target Audience:
- ASCM miners (women and men) and mineral rights owners.
- Producers and commercialization organisations in Peru: medium-sized processing plants, medium and large miners, local midstream stakeholders, and industry associations.
Principal Activities:
- Multi-stakeholder dialogues around ASCM challenges and opportunities
- A road map with a shared vision for the integration of artisanal and small-scale copper mining (ASCM) into responsible supply chains in Peru.
- A report on the territorial human rights and environmental risks as defined by the CRAFT Code.
- ASCMOs implement their improvement plans.
- Engagements with MSCMOs and processing plants on the CRAFT Code/Copper Mark standard
