Mercury Governance in the Artisanal and Small-scale Gold Mining Sector Project

Partner :  Association inter villageoise de gestion des ressources naturelles et de la faune de la Comoé-Léraba (AGEREF) .

 

Overall objective :

Examine the governance of the mercury value chain taking into account the formal and informal circuits of the chain in Burkina Faso.

Specific objectives :

1) Improve mercury governance in the artisanal and small-scale gold mining sector ;

2) Improve understanding of mercury flows, trade hubs and key actors ;

3) Improve recognition of the scale and scope and impact of informal mercury trade ;

4) Demonstrate that this is a global problem.

Main results :

The amount of mercury entering through formal and informal channels has been determined ;
The uses of mercury in the country have been identified ;
The existence or not of a licensing and monitoring system has been established ;
The most profitable link in the mercury value chain has been identified ;
The main obstacles to banning mercury trade have been identified ;
The main opportunities for banning mercury trade have been identified .
