The Alliance for Responsible Mining and the Fundación Ayuda support the leading role of women in the development of artisanal and small-scale mining

The Alliance for Responsible Mining (ARM) is pleased to announce a new project we are working on: “Strengthening the women’s role and its inclusion in productive chains in Colombian mining organizations and communities”. This project is been carrying out with the support of our ally, the Fundación Ayuda, and it is aimed at women in mining communities of five regions in Colombia: Antioquia, Nariño, Santander, Boyacá and Huila.

Women in artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) are exposed to discrimination and socio-economic marginalization, inside and outside mines, as mining often is considered as being exclusively men’s work.

Besides working in a rough environment every day, women’s working hours do not coincide with men´s. In addition to their workday in the mine women face a lot of other tasks including taking care of their children and husbands, and doing household chores as the kitchen, the laundry and cleaning. If women decide to have a better position in their communities, they must be willing to be trained

The objective of this project is to contribute to the empowerment of women in their communities. Through workshops in the regions, carried out by ARM´s experts, women will be identified and trained to become agents of change, learning how to use technology and computer tools, studying the virtual online course “Gender and mining community” and participating in discussion groups. Two women of each region who show a special potential in leadership will have the opportunity to attend a coaching workshop in Medellin. Women represent an important social group within mining communities, with a great potential to generate positive change in the sector and the community. Educating them about their rights and duties, and providing them with the appropriate tools, will help to strengthen their leadership and participation in decision-making processes.
