Objectives

  • Research and consultations to design analysis of the security and human rights challenges in the supply chain of artisanal gold production in Antioquia and lower Cauca.
  • Developing guidance and building capacities of ASM collectives, including on the Voluntary Principles.
  • Organizing capacity-building exchanges on the guidance tools.
  • Developing recommendations for the revision of the Fairmined standard.

Project summary

With the support and participation of the Group of Dialogue on Mining (GDIAM)- Antioquia region and the Observatoire Gouvernance et Paix (OGP) in South Kivu (Democratic Republic of Congo), DCAF and ARM carried out an exchange of experiences between stakeholder in Colombia and the DRC about how multistakeholder working groups on business, security and human rights can support in managing the risks of ASM to communities and civil society. GDIAM members and OGP proactively participated with questions and shared their experiences in mediation and risk prevention. 

Expected Results

  • Creation of recommendations to include the Voluntary Principles and other good practices on security and human rights in the Fairmined Standard.
  • Creation of a practical guide on Security and Human Rights for ASM. The objective is to facilitate due diligence management related to public and private security for ASM collectives. of the guidance focused on the pilot of Antioquia and draws from international standards and good practices. The guidance will be published in Fall 2021.
  • Strengthening security and human rights standards in the revised version of the CRAFT Code and their pilot application in this project.
