ARM MEMBERSHIP

A pioneering multi-stakeholder initiative championing responsible ASM sector.

ARM Membership is a stakeholder engagement program for companies and organizations ready to connect with responsible artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM). Through this initiative, members support mining communities, deepen their understanding of ASM-related risks and opportunities, and drive transformation by amplifying ARM’s impact. With a flexible fee structure tailored to company size, the program offers value to businesses both large and small.

Who can join?

Companies across the minerals supply chain from jewelry, electronics, and battery industries to refiners, traders, & manufacturers.

Financial institutions and investors interested in responsible mineral supply chains.

Consulting firms working in the domain of responsible mining and sourcing.

Universities, research institutions and schools with programs related to mineral supply chains.

Whether you are taking your first steps toward ASM engagement or already leading responsible sourcing initiatives, ARM Membership offers a valuable platform to learn, collaborate, and scale your impact.

Why engage with ASM?

Artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) sustains the livelihood of over 200 million people across nearly 100 countries, representing 2.5% of the global population. In many rural areas, it is the primary (and sometimes the only) source of income anchoring local economies where few alternatives exist.

The sector’s impact is massive:

20 million of people

ASM gold alone supports 20 million people, accounting for 20% of global production and 80% of employment in gold mining.

Minerals Beyond Gold

ASM provides not only gold but also key minerals for the global energy transition. These include cobalt, copper, zinc, rare earths, mica, diamonds, quartz, and construction materials.

ASM faces serious social and environmental challenges, from informality to deforestation. Yet its minerals are likely already in your supply chain. Engaging with ASM is both responsible and strategic—boosting communities, ecosystems, and supply chain resilience.

The Impact of the ARM Membership: Members story

The ARM Membership offers companies across a wide range of industries a low-risk, high-impact opportunity to engage with responsible artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM). Through this initiative, members support ASM communities, strengthen their responsible sourcing strategies, contribute to Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and foster innovative and long-term partnerships that create mutual value, for their business and the communities they support. From technology and manufacturing to jewelry, finance and precious metals refining, each member brings a unique contribution, helping drive systemic changes across global minerals supply chains.

Brilliant Earth: Scaling Commitment & Innovation in Responsible Jewelry

For years, Brilliant Earth has been a critical advocate for ethical sourcing in the jewelry industry, continuously expanding its support for responsible ASM. Through the ARM Membership, the company has deepened its engagement and impact, demonstrating how businesses can scale positive change year after year. As a strategic partner and ambassador for ARM and Fairmined, Brilliant Earth has embraced innovation while maintaining a view of the big picture.

  • Expanding Fairmined Sourcing: Despite industry barriers, Brilliant Earth has used Fairmined gold in two jewelry collections. In 2024, they expanded their  Fairmined Collection to include engagement and wedding ring styles, leading to an increase of over 300% in their use of Fairmined gold.
  • Adopting Fairmined Credits: To amplify their impact beyond direct sourcing, Brilliant Earth purchased Fairmined Credits, ensuring financial support reaches committed ASM communities facing challenges with access to market.
  • Strengthening the Fairmined Ecosystem: The brand has taken an active role in bringing key suppliers into Fairmined, helping expand responsible gold availability across the industry.
  • Investing in Mine Certification: Brilliant Earth has directly supported the certification process of ASM mines, helping more mining organizations achieve best practices and access Fairmined incentives.

By formalizing their long-term partnership through the ARM Membership, Brilliant Earth gains new opportunities to engage with ASM, explore innovative sourcing strategies, and leverage their influence to scale responsible mining practices across the sector.

“At Brilliant Earth, we believe true sustainability requires more than just purchasing ethical materials – it demands active partnership with mining communities. Our full-cycle approach with AMATAF demonstrates how companies can bridge the gap between achieving certification and long-term viability. By supporting Fairmined certification, we’re helping create pathways that benefit local communities – and in this case, those communities happen to be in situated in the biodiversity capital of the world. This isn’t just about responsible sourcing; it’s about building lasting relationships that improve environmental practices and transform the jewelry industry from the ground up.”

Allison Charalambous, VP, Responsible Sourcing & Sustainability, Brilliant Earth
